Teaching Philosophy

FOSTERING INCLUSIVE, EQUITABLE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

As an educator, I prioritize the cultivation and application of inclusive and equitable practices that empower students to share their unique voices as creators and collaborators.
Central to my teaching philosophy is the understanding that every student brings a distinctive set of experiences, perspectives, and talents to the classroom and each unique classroom culture. This understanding means that I build into my courses a variety of engagement methods to connect diverse individuals, establish pathways for collaboration and cultural exchanges, and ultimately connect all students in meaningful ways with the content.
I am committed to establishing classroom cultures that support students in stepping outside their comfort zones. My goal is to create an atmosphere where students feel comfortable trying something new, exploring different perspectives, and challenging their own assumptions. This approach cultivates a sense of intellectual curiosity and empowers students to engage in the learning process with a spirit of openness and courage. Students are encouraged to explore, create, and collaborate in an environment that values and rewards unique contributions and leaves room for different points of view. These principles are integral to establishing expectations, the learning process, and as factors for assessment.
Hallmarks of my courses are “living syllabi” and inclusive curricula that reflect a diversity of voices and perspectives. By inviting students to contribute to the course materials continually, I teach with a curriculum that is relevant, relatable, representative, and responsive to the diverse world in which we live. This broadens students’ horizons and encourages a more profound understanding and appreciation of different cultures, experiences, and ideas.
As an educator, my commitment to inclusive, equitable practices extends beyond the classroom to ongoing professional development. I actively seek out opportunities to enhance my understanding of diverse pedagogies and to stay informed about best practices in creating inclusive learning environments.
In conclusion, my teaching philosophy is student-centered and based on empowerment. My students are encouraged to explore their individuality, challenge assumptions, and cultivate a mindset of continuous growth. By fostering a culture of inclusivity and equity, I aspire to contribute to developing well-rounded, confident individuals prepared to navigate a diverse and ever-changing world.
